ABOUT CORKTOWN CINEMA The Corktown Cinema is the reincarnation of the Burton Theatre: an exciting independent cinema in Detroit that will feature classic art house, independent, LGBT, foreign and cult films. Responding to the shortage of art house venues in the city, the Corktown Cinema aims to help Detroit rival Chicago and New York as a center for independent film. While the Corktown Cinema will focus on film, it will not be limited to that. Its vision is to expand as a venue for music and other performance art with a focus on local artists. It will also work to engage its audience more deeply than typical theaters by making them active in programming and by creating a space where artists and patrons of the arts connect.
THE HISTORY For two years, the Burton Theatre was operated by four friends on a shoestring and a hunch. The theatre’s program was a continually evolving blend of those friends tastes and the tastes of the theatre’s patronage, coalescing to form a unique voice in the cinematic landscape of metro Detroit. Providing a venue for the foreign, low-budget, indie, local and weird the Burton was as eclectic and unique as the city itself. The theatre’s first major success was the hilarious blaxploitation homage, “Black Dynamite” in January 2010. The distributor of the film actually had to be vehemently petitioned to deliver the film to the Detroit market for a theatrical run, and was delighted by the turnout. In spring of 2010, the Burton hosted and co-produced the premier of the Detroit Independent Film Festival, a “film festival for filmmakers by filmmakers”, bringing to town Lloyd Kaufman, and the michigan premier of George Romero’s “Survival of the Dead”. In May 2010, the Burton bagan its CINEMA BARBEQUE series of big-screen outdoor films featuring the food of Porktown Sausage and Supino pizzeria. The summer of 2010 brought the live touring acts of multimedia monsters EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE!, Wham City Comedy Tour, experimental pop group Growing, Windy and Carl, Maths Balance Volume, Demons, and the Found Footage Festival. Also that summer began a series of films with live scores by local artists, beginning with “Haxan: Witchcraft through the ages” scored by STARE CASE (Nate Young and John Olsen of WOLF EYES). In december 2009, the Burton, in collaboration with MOCAD brought Crispin Glover to Detroit for the first time for a weekend of sold-out shows. In may 2011, after being forced to close suddenly due to a landlord dispute, the folks from the Burton continued with a series of shows “in exile”, bringing their signature fair to the Magic Bag in ferndale, their CINEMA BARBEQUE series to eastern market, and even a film to the Tashmoo Beirgarten.
USE OF FUNDS The funds collected will go towards the significant expense of converting a raw industrial space into a classy cinema: seats, a screen, acoustic treatment, curtains, construction of a sloped floor. ESTIMATED CINEMA OPEN DATE: SPRING 2012

BRANDON After seeing George Kuchar's "Hold Me While I'm Naked" at university, Brandon Walley realized he was pursuing the wrong profession. He quickly abandoned his music scholarship and dreams of becoming a jazz hepcat, started taking film classes and further limited the notion of becoming financially successful someday. His vagabond tendencies have lead him down many roads in the Detroit arts and culture community including former Director of the Detroit Film Center, curating film programs for international and local film festivals, instructing production classes and having his weird little experimental films show at galleries and film fests around the world. Brandon also likes long walks on the beach, hand holding and the idea of being a Buddhist however he doesn’t have the discipline.
DAVID David Allen was released onto this mortal coil on March 9th 1986 in Detroit Michigan. After brief stints in the shabby hamlets of New York and Chicago, David returned to the glitz and glamor of fabulous Detroit city in 2006 ready to join an already burgeoning creative scene. Through volunteering at many esteemed cultural institutions including the Ladybug Gallery (now Whitdel Arts) in Mexicantown and the Zeitgeist Theatre, David felt inspired to join the ranks of the many people running unique artistic operations within the city. In October 2009, along with three friends David founded The Burton Theatre as a means to bring the types of films he loved to the city he called home. When not founding independent movie theatres David enjoys pursuing his own creative endeavors including writing, film making and lapidary (the craft of working, forming and finishing stone, minerals and gemstones). David has also been known to lie about his hobbies.
NATHAN Nathan Faustyn is a Wayne State film graduate(TarTar) who has been active in the film community in Detroit since 2002. After growing up in White Lake, Michigan he left for Evanston, Illinois to attend Northwestern University before realizing Evanston is the Chipotle to Chicago’s Qdoba, which is further the Qdoba to Detroit’s Panchero’s. He chose Wayne State University and Detroit as his home. Over the years Nathan has worked for the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID), Co-Founded the Cinematheque Detroit, Co-founded the Burton Theatre, and Co-Founded the Detroit Independent Film Festival. Outside of those endeavors Nathan remains active in the film community, producing and making films, volunteering for the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and the Michigan High School Film Awards and attempting to brew his own beer. Nathan was the Director of Programming of the Burton Theatre before its unexpected closure and continues to program events in exile, along with his partners, and is preparing for the theatre's latest incarnation The Corktown Cinema. He currently resides in Corktown and appreciates the fact he can walk to Murrray’s Auto with a dead car battery at 11 in the morning and not be the only one.

JEFF Jeff Else was born Jeffery William Else on July the eleventh in the year of our lord nineteen eighty-five at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan, United States, Earth. A seasoned world traveler, he has spent time in both the Far East and the South American tropics. At the tender age of nineteen he was introduced to the art of cinema projection. Over the course of the following seven years Jeff has been on a journey both epic and deeply human. A man of many loves, Jeffery enjoys the subtle curves of German engineered film projectors and transportation devices. His other interests include keeping it real, starting independent cinemas, balling out of control and paying the cost to be the boss.
